Roland's Blog: June 2009

New Texting and Driving Law takes effect on July 1, 2009

Tennessee will join the ranks of of 9 other states that will have such a ban. Gov. Phil Bredesen signed he bill into law on May 15, 2009.  If you are cought texting or reading a text while driving (vehicle in motion) you will recieve a $50 fine. Law enforcement and emergency personel are exempt if they are performing their official duties. ( I guess the text is faster than their two way radio )

Other states that have a ban on texting and driving are Alaska, California, Connecut, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Jersey, Utah and Washington and the Distric of Columbia. On July 1,2009 Tennessee and Virginia will join the growing list.

This is going to be interesting if you use your ohone for GPS or even a Realtor looking at homes on the MLS. Guess you will need to stop your vehicle before viewing your phone.

Creating FREE E-Books in Easy Steps

worth looking into E-Books.

Via Elayna Fernandez - Marketing Expert - Naples FL (Designed 2 Impress, Inc.):
I recently read a blog post by Kevin Vitali in which he asked the community for suggestions on what he called “capturing leads” on his website.  I commented:

“I have two words: FREE E-book!  (is that three words?) okay then : FREE Report. :)

Shortly after my comment, I received a contact from another friend in ActiveRain asking me how I “get my E-books”.  I informed her that I design my own and decided that I should share more information on this subject.

First off, some are wondering  WHAT IS AN E-BOOK? An E-book is a Web-based publication (green publishing, if you will), which can be put together with NO INVESTMENT – yes, you heard me right – and little time and effort, and easily displayed on your reader’s screen with Adobe Acrobat, which is FREE public software, as well.

The second question you’ll probably want me to answer is WHY WOULD I PUBLISH an E-BOOK? I’M NOT – AND DO NOT WISH TO BE- a WRITER or an AUTHOR!!! Good point. You can benefit from digital publishing in many ways.

Like blogging, e-publishing helps you position yourself as the expert on a subject, an industry, a tool, a profession, or whatever it is you want to be the guru at.

E-books could be modeled in the fashion of eGuides, “How to” Manuals, Tips, Do’s and Don’ts and FREE advice.  Talk about providing value to your readership! (AKA future clients).

There’s a proverb you’ll hear a lot in the Dominican Republic that reads “Crea fama y acuestate a dormir”.  According to WikiQuote, it means something like “create something that brings you fame and live off the royalties”.  Creating an e-book that provides TIMELESS value and information will be time well spent because it will create a favorable perception towards your brand. (You still need to get your work done, though, don’t take the sleeping deal literal LOL).

In summary:

  • Providing value
  • Being the thought leader
  • Building a list

WHAT MAKES A GOOD E-BOOK?

  1. A catchy and intriguing title that promises to deliver what your ideal prospect wants to know about or wants more of.
  2. Content that increases knowledge, educates, solves a problem, saves money, makes life easier.
  3. Compelling writing style that is compliant with the rules that govern effective web copy.
  4. Fun layout, powerful images: very visually attractive!
  5. Fabulous branding to communicate your corporate personality, your credentials and contact information.

IS IT HARD TO CREATE? Absolutely not.  If you can blog, you can publish an e-book in 5 steps:

  1. Write your book title and chapter titles.
  2. Using Microsoft Word, type in information under each title. (e-books range anywhere from 5 to 50+ pages).
  3. Research back up information (quotes, statistics, definitions) and add them to the relevant spot in your copy.
  4. Take photos or buy stock photography, create custom graphs, maps or screen shots.  Add them where it makes sense.
  5. Convert the document to PDF using a FREE PDF editor, such as Primo PDF.

For a more sophisticated look, you can get you can hire a professional e-book editor and designer. The next step is to hire a web designer to create a landing page or create a request form on your existing website.

That’s it! Easy and Free!  It’s brilliant! Let me know your thoughts on e-books.  If you’ve already e-published, what did you write?

Thank you for taking the time to reading my post. Have a powerful day!

Blackberry Curve or Blackberry Storm ?

BB Curve - Photo by Roland Woodworth I'm trying to make a decision to switch phones from my current BB Curve to the BB Storm.  I hear that they are still working out bugs on the BB Storm.

My BB Curve tends to want to freeze up with text messages and takes a few minutes to free up to use again.  Please help me to make my decision as to keep the current BB Curve or make the leap to the BB Storm. This phone came out about 2 months after I purchased my BB Curve.  Grrrr....

I hear that on the BB Storm that I can view PDF files and have much more options with the internet compaired to the BB Curve.

BB Storm - Photo by Roland Woodworth

I would like to hear your thoughts and personal experiences using either one of this phones.

  • Did you switch from one to the other ?
  • Do you like or dislike either one
  • Advantages of one over the other
  • Comparison of operational functions
  • Ease of use comparisons
  • Any other thoughts

I'm sure this can be very interesting to see what others think of each of these two phones. I'm sure others are thinking of some of the same questions.

2 cats looking for a new home

A co-worker is in the process of making a cross country move as her husband is in the US Army. They have 2 cats that they need to find a new home. If you or anyone you know is interested, please comment below so she can contact you.

Here is Shannons story:

Are you looking for a great companion? Thinking of a dog? Most people think of a dog when considering a family pet. We love both dogs and cats. We have 3 cats and 1 dog. 2 of our cats came to us a couple years ago due to a deployment. Gracey came to us as a 9 week old kitten and Felix came as a 2 year old. Their owners never came to get them when they returned from deployment. We love them both so very much. They came into our home the same day. Gracey and Felix are best friends. They are both grey w/black stripes. Both fixed and are indoor/outdoor cats.

We are going to PCS at the end of July. We are accepting housing at our new duty station and because they are indoor/outdoor they cannot move into housing with us. The decision to not take them with us has made us very sad. So we are asking if there is anyone out there who would consider helping out and taking our beloved cats and make them a part of your family. They are great with kids as well as our high energy ADHD beagle. Fun to watch. They love to snuggle with you and just hang out. Felix will even lay next to you if you don't get up at the first alarm just purrring and trying to wake you up. Very loving. They always go in their litter box and will let you know when they are hungry. Felix will often times go for walks with us when we are walking our dog. Quite a sight!!!!

If you are looking for a new addition to your family, please consider Gracey and Felix.

Have an amazing day!
